The Poles have a king which Plato, Aristotle, Xenophon , a whole legion of philosophers and legislators had imagined as the perfect ruler, desired by nature and God himself. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Program created to commemorate the 500th Birthday of Zygmunt August (1520).<\/p>\n

The concert is a musical tale of the life and achievements of the Polish king, whose reign is one of the most celebrated epochs in Polish history. War and politics, a love and support of the arts, courtly celebrations and folly as well as the famous love affair and in connection, the mystery of the royal pearls of the beloved Queen Barbara (Barbara Radziwi\u0142\u0142\u00f3wna), the King\u2019s second wife – all this comes together in a musical tale bringing forth the most beautiful Polish and European Renaissance music.<\/p>\n

Repertoire<\/b>:<\/p>\n

Masters of the Polish Renaissance and composers from all over Europe, whose music was performed at the Jagiellonian Court (in accordance with the inventory of musical works from Sigismundus\u2019 reign from the library of Jerzy Jasi\u0144czyc, master of the Wawel capella <\/i>of singers). This includes Wac\u0142aw of Szamotu\u0142y, Valentinus Bakfark, Jakub Polak, Cyprian Bazylik, Miko\u0142aj Gom\u00f3\u0142ka, Cipriano de Rore, dances from the Jan of Lublin Tabulature and anonymous works – wedding and funeral songs about Sigismundus and Barbara.<\/p>\n

Performers<\/b>:<\/p>\n

5-10 , including solo singer and instrumentalists, 1-2 pairs of dancers. The concert may be performed in historical costume in collaboration with Nomina Rosae Foundation (www.nomina.pl<\/a>) and TANART historical dance group from Warsaw, which specialises in 15th and 16th century courtly dance.<\/p>\n
